what is a "skill", actually?

a skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file inside. the SKILL.md has YAML frontmatter (name + description) and a structured prompt that claude auto-activates when your message matches what the skill does. example: you say "build me a website" → claude reads your installed skills → matches ai-builder-website → executes its engineered prompt against your brain doc → ships an on-brand site. you don't have to copy-paste anything. the skill fires by itself. installed once, used forever.

how do i install it in claude / chatgpt / cursor / gemini?

claude.ai (web): settings → capabilities → skills → upload the folder. claude code / claude desktop: drop the folder in your project as .claude/skills/. cursor: paste the SKILL.md prompts into .cursorrules. chatgpt: create a Custom GPT, paste the prompts as instructions. gemini: paste into the Gem builder. install guide ships in the zip as README.md. takes ~5 minutes the first time.

do i need claude pro? does this work on free?

native skill auto-activation works best on claude pro ($20/mo). on free claude, you can paste any SKILL.md prompt directly into the chat as instructions. the engineering still works, you just lose the auto-fire. all 25 SKILL.md files double as paste-ready prompts. so: works on free, optimized for pro.

how is this different from just using chatgpt?

two differences. first: these prompts are engineered (role assignment, clarifying questions, output spec, format requirements, deploy block). most "AI prompts" you see online are one-liners that produce generic output. these are structured to produce specific, on-brand, deployable work. second: they install once and auto-activate. you don't paste a prompt every time you want a new landing page. you say "build me a landing page" and the skill fires automatically using your brain doc as context. chatgpt doesn't natively support that without manual paste-every-time.

can i edit the skills? are they locked files?

they're plain markdown files. open in any text editor. edit anything. the prompts inside are engineered (role assignment, clarifying questions, output spec, format requirements) but you own them after purchase. fork them, remix them, swap the wording for your industry. nothing is locked.

what if i'm not technical?
